Genetic counseling is a consultation to evaluate genetic risk based on medical and family history, provide recommendations related to genetic testing, and explain often-complex genetic results. The purpose of genetic counseling is not to make health decisions for you, but to facilitate your understanding so that you may make informed choices for yourself and your family.
We are available four days per week:
Monday and Wednesday 3-6pm CST,
Tuesday and Thursday 4-6pm CST
Appointments are conducted via telehealth either by phone or through video chat (via our HIPAA-compliant video platform). In-person consult would be considered in exceptional circumstances.
During the genetic consultation, a detailed medical and family history will be taken to provide a personalized assessment of your risk factors. A discussion will be performed as needed for each situation: for example genetic test result discussion or recommendation for genetic testing that can be performed through your physician.
Even though it is common for genetic counselors in more than half of US states to independently order genetic testing, state of Texas still does not have licensure law for genetic counselors. Thus, genetic counselors in state of Texas can discuss genetic testing result and "counseling" for genetics-associated issues but cannot order genetic testing independently for now. Texas Society of Genetic counselors and other national professional organizations are working on passing this important law in the state and hopefully soon we will have success in getting it implemented.
